Since it was founded in 1931, Bodega José Luís Ferrer, endorsed by the Majorcan appellation DO Binissalem-Mallorca, has subjected its winemaking techniques and its wine range to a non-stop process of renewal and adaptation to the times.
Bodega José Luís Ferrer, a pioneer by the Majorcan appellation DO Binissalem-Mallorca, in many fields throughout its almost 80-year track record, this bodega, marked by difficult beginnings, namely the downturn in Majorca wine production in the 1930s, has made evolution its philosophy; a phenomenon which has turned it into a benchmark for the region’s wines, where it is currently investing in a wine collection made using organic agriculture techniques.
José Luís Ferrer, the current director’s grandfather, founded the bodega which takes his name in 1931; a difficult time for wine production in Majorca, marked also by the Spanish Civil War and the post-war subsistence economy. However, Bodega José Luís Ferrer firmly established itself as a pioneer on the island by making aged wines, which were later finely-tuned in the bottle, from a selection of grape varieties including the outstanding native variety, Manto Negro. A venture which coincided with the bodega’s first international market expansion policy, helping to position its wines, from the 1950s on, in countries such as Switzerland and the UK.
In 1964 the bodega was to perfect its winemaking techniques by implementing temperature control in the fermentation process, another practice which again made it a pioneer on the island. In addition, during that period the bodega endeavoured to maintain its commitment to native grape varieties by growing the white grape, Moll from which it would make its wine, ‘Blanc de Blancs de Binissalem’; it being the only bodega at the time which made and aged wine without importing it from the mainland, a common practice carried out in Majorca in the 1960s.
